From Casual to Capable

A course in working with Claude for people who already use it — and the curriculum design underneath it, published alongside so the reasoning is inspectable.

Most people who use Claude casually are missing the same thing, and it isn't technique. They have no working model of what it's doing, so when an answer comes back wrong they can't tell whether the tool failed, the request was under-specified, or the task was never a fit. Without that, a bad answer is just bad luck. With it, a bad answer is a diagnosis.

Lesson 1 — What It's Actually Doing

The mental model everything else hangs off, in three consequences. Includes a real set of five citations where two are invented, one is a near-miss, and nothing on the page tells you which.

The Eight-Module Curriculum

Every module's objective, the misconception it has to defuse, its exercise, and how a learner checks themselves with nobody grading. Written for whoever builds the modules, so it argues with itself in places.

Lessons

Read in order — each depends on the one before it. Roughly thirty minutes each, and each one ends with something you can do differently the same day.

What It's Actually Doing

With no source it's generating, not looking up. Sequential output isn't a log of the reasoning. And what it learned has an end date it can't tell you about.

The rest are designed, not yet built

Lessons 2–8 exist as full module specifications in the curriculum — objective, core concept, misconception, exercise, self-check and sequencing rationale for each. They become lessons in order: Available information, Specification, Diagnosis, Evidence, Persistence, Surfaces, and the capstone.

Two things worth knowing before you start

Nothing here needs your real work documents

Every exercise ships with its own material, and no lesson requires you to upload anything from your job to complete it. Where using your own material would make an exercise more useful, that is offered as an option and never as the price of admission.
